Native Bees in Howard County
Howard County is home to approximately 137 species of native bees! There are about 400 native bee species in the state of Maryland, divided into five main families: Bumble Bees, Sweat Bees, Miner Bees, Leafcutter and Mason Bees, and Plasterer Bees.
Native bees are extremely important to Howard County’s farms and gardens. They are excellent at pollinating native plant species, since they evolved together. Non-native Honeybees, which can also be found throughout the US, are often inefficient at pollinating native flowers, trees, and even crops when compared to the efficiency of native bees.

Native bees are CRITICAL for the food we eat, the flowers in our gardens, and the trees that give us shade and oxygen!
The best ways you can help support native bees in your garden, neighborhood, and community is to:
- Plant Native Plants
- Do Less Landscaping – leave the leaves, mow less, & leave stems standing
- Use Fewer Pesticides
- and spread the word to your neighbors!
